Class Description: Bluebird Bungalow, Nuthatch Hutch, Cuckoo Cottage, and the Martin Motel - who wouldn’t want one of these adorable brass birdhouses? Well, you can make all four! Building amusing and whimsical birdhouses from spent brass bullet casings is a fun and super easy way to upcycle an unusual material you might not otherwise think to use in jewelry making.

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials Kit (included in price): brass cartridge shells, pattern brass, brass sheet, brass wire, embellishments. The kit includes enough materials to make four birdhouses! Domestic US shipping.**

Required Tools:  

  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Flush cutters
  • Bench block
  • Rawhide or nylon mallet
  • Metal shears
  • Sanding sticks
  • Digital calipers
  • Center punch
  • Jeweler's saw and 3/o or 4/o saw blades
  • Bench pin
  • Fine point Sharpie
  • Bees wax or Cut Lube
  • Dremel, flex shaft, or drill press
  • HSS drill bit #56 (1.02mm)
  • Large HSS drill bit (3mm) or reamer bur
  • Texturing tools (hammers or metal stamps)
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Brass patina (Midas or Jax) optional
  • Steel wool (optional)
  • Solder Set-up,
    • medium and easy paste solder.
    • Torch 
    • Fireproof surface
    • Quench bowl
    • Pickle
    • Solder pick
    • Cross-lock tweezers (secure transfer of hot items from solder board to quench bowl)
    • Flux
