Skill Level: Intermediate
Pre-requisite: Student should be familiar a butane torch and basic bezel setting
Class Description: In this class we will be creating an open-form ring with a staggered tube-set gemstone. Students will learn how to calculate internal shape and curve against setting depth, as well as alternate tube- anchoring techniques. Accurate cutting and setting will be emphasized to get a graceful, elegant result.
Due to the current price of silver no kits are being offered at this time. If you would like to make this in silver, a list of materials will be provided after registration.
Torch: Instructor will be demonstrating using a butane torch, however, any torch except a microtorch will work.
Project Completion: Students who work quickly will have enough time to finish the project during class time.
Required Tools and Supplies:
- Sharpie
- Chain nose pliers
- Multi-looping pliers
- Brass brush
- Bench block
- Rawhide mallet or Nylon mallet
- Chasing hammer
- Goldsmith hammer or ballpein hammer
- Bench pin
- Steel dap set
- Ring sizer
- Ring clamp
- Third hand
- Sanding sticks or buffing blocks in coarse, medium and fine.
- Sand paper 220, 400, 600, 1200
- Jeweler's saw and 4/o saw blades
- Cut lube or bees wax
- Steel ring mandrel and forming wedge
- Needle files
- Student files
- Fine tweezers
- Metal ruler 6”
- Digital caliper
- Flex shaft (3M Bristle Discs in coarse medium and fine)
- Magnifying glasses (as needed)
- Polish: Zam, Eurolustre or Rouge
- Steel wool
- Solder pick
- Any jeweler's torch except Microtorch.
- Soldering set up: butane, torch, solder board, tripod with mesh, pickle, fire tweezers, quench bowl, flux, copper tongs, silver solder wire: Hard, Med., Easy
